For more than 50 years, designers and manufacturers of transformers, generators, motors and other electrical equipment have relied on a unique combination of distinctive properties of Nomex paper to optimize performance, increase reliability and extend the life of their products. Nomex products offer electrical, chemical and mechanical integrity. This makes them ideal for a wide range of insulation applications such as slot insulation, housing slider, slot closure and phase insulation in electric motors and generators, layered insulation in voltage transformers and potting as jacket insulation in other electrical equipment.
11 Properties that distinguish Nomex papers:
- Dielectric strength
- Mechanical strength
- High temperature resistance
- High chemical compatibility
- High resistance to radiation
- Non-combustible
- Insensitive to moisture
- Suitable for low temperatures
- Good impregnating ability
- Good coating ability
- Good formability
The inherent dielectric strength of paper Nomex
At high density, Nomex allows short-term electrical loads from 18 kV/mm to 3
kV/mm (60 V/mil to 870 V /mil), depending on product type and thickness.
Mechanical strength of Nomex papers
Nomex HighDensity products have high mechanical strength, tensile and wear resistance and are also very flexible (at reduced thickness).
Nomex Papers High Temperature Resistance
Temperatures up to 200 °C have little or no effect on the mechanical and electrical properties of Nomex products. The useful properties of Nomex paper are retained even at much higher temperatures. These useful properties of Nomex paper are retained for at least 10 years, even in continuous use at temperatures up to 220°C.
High chemical compatibility of Nomex paper
Nomex products are practically insensitive to most solvents and are particularly resistant to acids and bases. They are compatible with all paints and adhesives, transformer fluids, lubricants and coolants. Since Nomex products are indigestible, they are not attacked by insects, fungi or mold.
High radiation resistance of Nomex paper
Nomex paper is virtually unaffected by 800 MegaGray ionizing radiation and retains its useful electrical and mechanical properties after being exposed to this radiation eight times.
Flame Retardant Nomex Paper
Nomex products do not cause toxic reactions in humans or animals. Nomex products do not melt or support combustion with an LOI greater than 20.8 at 220°C (the critical value for combustion in normal air). Nomex products are readily available and meet the requirements of the Underwriters Laboratory Standard (UL) 9 VO.
Moisture Transporting Nomex Paper
At equilibrium at 95% relative humidity, Nomex paper and high-density paperboard retain 90% of their dielectric strength while improving many of their mechanical properties.
Low temperature suitability
Nomex products are used in a variety of cryogenic applications due to their unique polymer structure. At the boiling point of nitrogen (77 K), Nomex 10, Nomex 993 PSB and Nomex 99 PSB have greater tensile strength than at room temperature.
Good punchability of Nomex paper
All types of Nomex papers and sheets can be processed using conventional die-cutting techniques. Sheets can be milled into parts for high voltage transformers on CNC machining centers.
Good opacity of Nomex paper
Nomex paper can be coated with a conventional adhesive system to form an adhesive tape. Nomex paper can also be coated with an epoxy resin system to form preregs.
Good moldability of Nomex paper
Nomex can be used to make molded parts for applications in transformers and electric motors.
